Mokali Dal | Vatali Dal | Prasad Dal

Mokali dal is a traditional authentic Maharashtrian recipe. Mokali Dal is distributed as Prasad on the day of Ganapati visarjan, Anant chaturdashi or on the evening of Mangalagauri. It is a nice side dish too.

During Ganpati festival we generally offered sweet Prasad to Ganpati Bappa, but at the last day of festival, according to our tradition we offer spicy and tasty dal Prasad with Modak to Lord Ganesha. Today I am sharing this traditional spicy and tasty Mokali Dal.

Preparation Time: 10 mins

Cooking Time: 20 mins

Type: Snacks

Serve: 2-3 People


  • 1 cup Split Chickpeas (soaked)
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard Seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds Pinch of Asafoetida
  • 2 Green Chillies (chopped)
  • 7-8 Curry Leaves
  • 1 tsp Ginger (grated)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  •  Salt to taste
  • Water as required
  •  2 Tbsp Fresh Coconut(grated)
  • Coriander Leaves(chopped)
  •  Half Lemon Juice

Method of Preparation:

  • Wash the Split Chickpeas 2-3 times with water & soak it for at least 4 hours.
  • Drain the water and keep aside for further use.
  • Heat up Oil in a pan.
  • Add Mustard Seeds and let them pop up.
  • Add Cumin Seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add Asafoetida, Curry leaves, Green Chillies and Ginger. Saute well.
  • Add Turmeric Powder, Red Chilli Powder and Coriander Powder; saute for few seconds.
  • Add Split Chickpeas, salt and mix well.
  • Now add water and stir well
  • Cover and cook on low flame about 10 minutes.
  • Remove the lid; add sugar, Coriander leaves and Fresh Coconut. Mix well.
  • Again cover and cook for about next 2-3 minutes.
  • Add Lemon juice and mix well. Turn off the flame and Mokali Dal is ready.
  • Garnish with fresh shredded coconut and coriander leaves while serving.
